Nice, quiet State Park. Lots of wlbow room, several pavilions, nice facilities.
Beautiful setting for a very nice craft, plant, music, fun, good food mountain festival
In the second week of September we went camping in the Alleghanies. We city dwellers are scared of snakes and forests and crawlies and creepies little realizing that our roads are actually more dangerous. Anyway Gopal (our son) is a nature lover and a camping enthusiast so he took us there and gave a great experience. Yurt-2 had been booked and we stayed there for a day. Pacific yurts are a modern adaptation of the original Mongolian yurt built to weather extreme weather Well our yurt had all facilities like gas, MW frig dining table and beds for 6 but the bathroom was at a distance and water had to be got from nearby hydrants. After tea and snacks we went on a small trail and returned to cook on a camp-fire. We had bought 'the bundle of warmth' as the firewood was called at a New York shop. The weather being dry the fire caught up soon and Gopal prepared 'paneer tikkas' on his skewer as a starter. The paneer had been marinated at home in a mint, coriander, honey orange juice spiced combination and tasted good. Then the big brinjal was placed on the skewer while a huge sweet-potato was wrapped up in foil and placed in the fire to cook. The rice was cooked in the rice-cooker. When the brinjal blackened and the sweet potato was cooked they were smashed separately. Tomatoes and jalapenos were fried in a cast-iron skillet and combined with the brinjals. We enjoyed our dinner thoroughly. Gopal asked us to look up and OMG it seemed like ages since we had seen so many stars ! For the first time in my life i saw 'The Milky Way' or Akash Ganga. With our TV and computer addiction we have forgotten to enjoy nature .'Why are there no street-lights Gopal?' I queried, Because we are in the forest and we have to avoid 'light pollution' amma he said. And what is this 'light pollution? ' We cannot see the stars at night in cities because of the heavy lights, Nights have to be light-free he said and this was a revelation to me. Anyway after star-gazing we went to bed waking up several times as it got cold and there were strange noises.
Very quiet little park, areas for picnicking and camping, unfortunately it doesn't look like there is any active park management here. It is however surrounded by the Moshannon State Forest, so there is easy access to some of those trails.
Close to I-80. Restrooms. Plenty of picnic and grilling spaces. Rustic buildings.
Camping in the Alleghenies
Next morning after coffee/tea and applying insect repellant all over started our hike wearing thick shoes and socks, carrying water and nuts and a stick. The trail could be followed by the yellow paints on the trees and orange ones in the orchard trail. The walk through the rows and rows of coniferous trees was stimulating . We did not see any animals except an orange baby lizard with spots and plenty of beautiful spider-webs. The sound of dew-drops at the start became the sound of falling leaves and rustling ones. There was vegetation under some trees and none under others. Ferns, moss, lichen and roots going across the paths and deciduous cones were scattered along the way. There were oil-rigs to be seen and it was an hour and a half when we completed it. Afterwards Potatoes were wrapped in aluminum foil and cooked in the blazing fires. After crumbling and seasoning with salt pepper and fresh oregano leaves bread was toasted with butter, a layer of mint chutney and potato crumble was placed in between and brunch was ready followed by tea/coffee(we had brought milk etc from home as also pots and pans and bed-sheets. There was a whole list starting from first-aid box to water-gallons and ice. Anyway after using up the firewood we packed up, cleaned the yurt, tied up our garbage and said bye-bye to the chipmunk going up and down the tree and the white silky caterpillar on the yurt window. It was a rejuvenating trip and we drove home enjoying the 'Fall-colours' as we drove home to Cleveland .
